Human Bodies Are So Inconvenient

Cassandra Carr

Chapter One

Declan, Warrior Four, stared at Cole, Warrior Six. They’d each taken a human form for the invasion and he couldn’t understand why these strange new parts of his felt so…stiff. This had never happened before. Normally, when in roboform, he was attracted to the so-called female models, but suddenly he found himself wanting to see what Cole would feel like rubbing against his own human body.

They all tried to stay in their roboforms whenever possible, since humans were so repulsive to them, so he didn’t understand the reactions “his” body was having or what to do about them. At least they wouldn’t be bothered with the mundane annoyances of being human, such as needing to eat and relieve their waste. Their advanced systems took care of all that stuff for them.

A voice sounded from far away. It was speaking English, which Declan understood, but it was still weird to hear it coming from Stacia, Warrior Two. Why was she bothering to use it now? “You’re not paying attention, Four. You ready?”

“I’m ready.”

Ah, trying to get my attention by using English. Declan resisted the urge to roll his eyes. It wasn’t as if he was a rookie. Declan was one of the most decorated warriors in the fleet. He could invade a planet in his sleep.

Two turned back to the group and spoke in their native language. “The element of surprise is crucial in this attack. We’ll have plenty of backup from the robo and air forces, but we need to take the planet quickly and efficiently. Everyone has their electrobomb?”

Declan looked down at himself and then back at Cole. And then some.

They loaded onto planes and of course, with his luck, Cole was his co-pilot. They might be floating around in space in invisible mode for a couple of days before everyone was in place and Declan wasn’t looking forward to sharing the cramped quarters with Cole, especially since it was crucial they stay in their human forms to be ready to attack at any moment.

The controls of the ship morphed to accommodate his new body and, although he knew it was necessary, it agitated him that he couldn’t just hook directly into his brain like he normally did to captain the plane. He and the other pilots had spent countless hours in simulations, learning how to make their human forms react to being fired upon and to navigating the ship, but Declan still felt nowhere near as comfortable as he’d like. He stared down at the smooth, large hands currently clutching a steering mechanism of sorts and shook his head. Such a rudimentary way to fly.

Declan took off as soon as Cole had belted himself in, hyper-turboing it to their assigned coordinates. Once there, he changed the ship from stealth mode to invisible mode and went to check everything out in the engine and controls area. Cole, as the co-pilot, had his own checklist, and when they rubbed up against each other in a narrow passageway Declan’s breath caught.
